Serbia officially the Republic of Serbia (Serbian: Република Србија, Republika Srbija) is a landlocked country at the crossroads of Southeast and Central Europe, located in the Balkans and the Pannonian Plain. It borders Hungary to the north, Romania to the northeast, Bulgaria to the southeast, North Macedonia to the south, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the west, and Montenegro to the southwest. Serbia claims a border with Albania through the disputed territory of Kosovo. Serbia has about 6.6 million inhabitants, excluding Kosovo. Its capital Belgrade is also the largest city. Serbia was also part of Yugoslavia between 1918 and 1992.

Peel visited Yugoslavia on numerous occasions in the 70's when Serbia was part of that territory. However, he never visited the Serbian region, but went to Slovenia and Croatia, when they were part of Yugoslavia.

In 1990, Peel was interviewed by a Yugoslavian journalist and received records from him featuring Yugoslavian alternative music. These included a Serbian act called Disciplina Kičme, which Peel played in the early 90's on his radio programmes.

On his 30 January 2002 show, Peel mentioned being interviewed for Serbian radio station B92 and receiving records from them, which included a compilation album released by B92 called Srbija: Sounds Global, which he played a track from on that show.

Later in the summer of that year, Marko from Belgrade emailed Peel to thank him for the boxes of surplus 12" singles that he won in a competition. They were delivered by the Nab Woodley collective ("Noel, Howard, Ben and Matt"), who coincidentally also contacted Peel asking for a dedication for their new Serbian friends on his 26 June 2002 show.

Later in the year, Peel sent again a surplus of 12" records to B92 via his friends, the Nab Woodley group, to help the radio station, which was mentioned on his 24 September 2002 programme.

Peel mentioned on his 26 September 2002 show how his wife Sheila travelled to the Serbian city of Novi Sad, where a German man gave her a lift, whilst hitchhiking and exposed his penis to her. He played a track from Serbian band, Obojeni Program, on that show and mentioned that they too were from Novi Sad.

After Peel's death in 2004, Serbian radio station, Studio B paid tribute to him by having their Pop Depresija (Pop Depression) programme allocate a two hour show of Peel sessions music from the 00's decade.
