John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Slovenia, officially the Republic of Slovenia (Slovene: Republika Slovenija), is a country located in Central Europe at the crossroads of main European cultural and trade routes. It is bordered by Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Hungary to the northeast, Croatia to the southeast, and the Adriatic Sea to the southwest. One of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia is now a parliamentary republic and member nation of the European Union, United Nations, and NATO. The capital and largest city is Ljubljana. Slovenia has a mostly mountainous terrain with a mainly continental climate, with the exception of the Slovene Littoral, which has a sub-Mediterranean climate, and of the Julian Alps in the northwest, which have an Alpine climate.

Peel with the Pig and roommate Gerry went on a roadtrip to the former Yugoslavia in August 1971. On his column for Disc & Music Echo, published on 28th August 1971, Peel mentioned staying at Camping Ježica in Ljubljana, where “among the tables a small band played and a smart fat man sang. Not, mercifully the Yugoslav equivalent of "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" but local songs full of harmony and melody. On the floor the dancers laughed and a lone man swam naked in the pool." [1]

According to Margrave Of The Marshes, Peel also revisited the former Yugoslavia on a road trip with the Pig and the Youth Club in September 1975. An article about the Youth Club's trip to Yugoslavia was published in September 1975 on the Great Finborough Newsletter. [2]

Peel also played many Slovene acts on his shows, most well known one was Laibach, who did two sessions for his programmes. He also played in May 1986 an English language soundtrack of a guide to the Postojna Cave, which is one of the top tourist attractions in the country.
