Sly and Robbie were a prolific Jamaican rhythm section and production duo, associated primarily with the reggae and dub genres. Drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare teamed up in the mid-1970s after establishing themselves separately in Jamaica as professional musicians. Robbie Shakespeare died in December 2021 following kidney surgery.[1]

Links to Peel[]
As a huge fan of reggae, John Peel played the work of Sly & Robbie frequently down the decades, not only in the form of releases under the celebrated duo's own name but also their work as rhythm section with the Revolutionaries and other top Jamaican studio bands of the 1970s, as well as their productions for Mighty Diamonds, Black Uhuru and others.
As a production team, Sly & Robbie became known for updating roots reggae with electronic sounds and other innovations, which didn't always find favour with Peel. On his 31 July 1983 (BFBS) show, the DJ wondered aloud whether he was the only person unsure about their “metronomic” precision.
Peel also gave airime to many releases on the duo's own Taxi label, by artists including Gregory Isaacs, Capleton, Dennis Brown, Sugar Minott, Beenie Man, Cutty Ranks, Anthony Red Rose, Bounty Killer, U-Roy, Johnny Osbourne, Junior Delgado and Chaka Demus.[2]
From the 1980s, often based at the Compass Point studio of Island Records in Nassau, Sly & Robbie worked with many leading international musicians, including former Peel session artists such as Joe Cocker and Joan Armatrading.
