Stoneground was an American rock band formed in 1970 in Concord, California. Originally a trio, Stoneground expanded to a 10-piece band by the time of their eponymous 1971 debut album. The group appeared in two films, Medicine Ball Caravan (1971) and Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972), and released three albums before singer Sal Valentino quit in 1973. Three other band members—Cory Lerios, Steve Price and David Jenkins—left to form pop group Pablo Cruise. Stoneground continued as an act through 1982, with only Tim Barnes and Annie Sampson remaining from the early incarnation of the band. Barnes and Price led a re-formed Stoneground in 2003 and released a studio album the following year.
Links to Peel[]
Stoneground became fashionable for a short period in the early 1970s. A San Francisco band at a time when that city's music was still seen as a model for British hippy era groups, they projected the image of a "community band" who lived communally as a "family", rather than one hungry for stardom and commercial success. But unlike San Francisco bands of the psychedelic era, they were influenced by soul and R&B as much as folk and rock.
They were signed by Warner Brothers and benefited from the "hip" image of that label's newly-opened London office when they toured the UK in 1971. Peel played a few tracks by Stoneground on his radio programmes, the group did a Radio 1 In Concert and a session for his show during their tour, but Pete Drummond seemed more enthusiastic than JP about them, touring with them and having them in session on his Sounds Of The Seventies show. The original ten-piece band soon split up, however, and Peel paid no attention to them after that.
