John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

  • A cassette compilation from the collection of Peel Group member mr_maudlin, recorded from the BBC Radio 1 John Peel show but with no DJ links. The show was recorded on Hi-Fi VHS then edited to cassette from a good FM signal.
  • I must have been doing some hardcore listening to Peel in June and July 1993. The notebook I used at the time has an entry for every show in these two months.
  • Records bought at the time: Heavenly, Even As We Speak, Velocity Girl and Ultramarine.
  • Records I wished I'd bought: well, if I'm honest all of them probably, but in particular The New Bad Things and the Silver Jews. The Discogs page for the I Suck single has a very good summary of the origin and impact of the song.
  • What still sounds great 27 years later: Jack Drag, Lime Birds, Hardvark, El Inquillino Comunista, and of course, New Bad Things.
  • TDK AR-X90. I had a bit of tape wobble at the start of side 2 (the Slow Change Madagascar track) which is unusual for TDK tapes, but hopefully isn't too noticeable.
