Those Naughty Lumps were a punk/ new-wave band hailing from Liverpool. Formed in 1977, the group became part of the burgeoning 'new Merseybeat' music scene in the city towards the late 1970s. Core members were Peter Hart (vocals), Martin "Armadillo" Cooper (bass), Bobby Carr (guitar), Gordon Grimble (guitar) and Kev Wilkinson (drums). With their eccentric style, The Lumps had a reputation for being "the worst band imaginable" but were always well received by local crowds. The band released one single, Iggy Pop's Jacket, on Zoo records, around the same time that Teardrop Explodes released their debut single 'Sleeping Gas' on the same label. The track also features on the Zoo compilation LP To The Shores Of Lake Placid, where some instruments are accredited to Dave Balfe (Teardrop Explodes) and Bill Drummond (Big in Japan, and later KLF), both aka The Chameleons, who also produced the single.
Those Naughty Lumps have reformed in recent years for live work and some self-released recordings. (see Facebook page)
Links to Peel[]
Peel became aware of the group via their debut single release on Liverpool's Zoo label. The Lumps' recorded output was fairly limited compared to their 'new Merseybeat' contemporaries although the DJ did pick up on their second release, Down at the Zoo EP, released on Open Eye in 1980, and also picked out their contribution to the 'Lake Placid' label compilation in 1982.
Guitarist Bobby Carr later joined The Moderates and performed for the group's Peel session in 1981. The Lumps also claim early connections with Pete Wylie.
