John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

John Peel's University Challenge

Jeremy Paxman on University Challenge asking questions related to John Peel's Festive Fifty, broadcast on 30th December 2015.

Peel mentioned on his 03 December 2002 show that University Challenge was one of those TV programmes he likes watching:

"I was watching 'University Challenge' at the weekend, which is one of those programmes that I do like to watch because every once in a while I can astonish the Pig by coming up with the right answer to something. That's the advantage really of a public school education as it was, when I went to school, because it enables you to speak for about twenty seconds on almost any subject under the sun, but there's really nothing about which you know a great deal. Why did I mention that? Because Edinburgh University lost, and the Pig and I were sitting on our sofa. We liked the Southampton people, but we felt amazingly sorry for the Edinburgh University people, which we always do. Does that make us rather soft and pathetic people? I think it probably does." [1]

In an interview with Katie Shimmon of The Guardian published on 26th July 2004, Peel mentions University Challenge as one of the TV programmes he likes. [1]

Jeremy Paxman asked questions on University Challenge relating to John Peel in 2014 under the section of "bands that had their first real break through courtesy of a John Peel session" and in 2015 for the Christmas version on the topic of "John Peel's Festive Fifty".
