Winifred Atwell

Una Winifred Atwell (later called herself Winifred Atwell) (27 February or 27 April 1910 or 1914 – 28 February 1983) was a Trinidadian pianist, born in Tunapuna in Trinidad & Tobago, who enjoyed great popularity in Britain and Australia from the 1950s with a series of boogie-woogie and ragtime hits: she sold over 20 million records. She was the first black person to have a number one hit in the UK Singles Chart with "Let's Have Another Party" in 1954 (also the Christmas number 1 for that year) and is still the only female instrumentalist to do so.

Peel was an avid fan of Winifred Atwell's boogie-woogie work since childhood and occasionally played her tracks on his show. He included her "Black And White Rag" (well-known to snooker viewers as the theme to Pot Black) on his show of 06 June 1977 to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee, and again in his Peelenium 1951 on 21 September 1999. He would later regularly play her tracks as part of the Pig's Big 78. John said on the 6th June 1977 show that "Once upon a time I used to have every record Winifred Atwell ever made"
