The Wipers was an American punk rock band formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1977 by guitarist and vocalist Greg Sage, along with drummer Sam Henry and bassist Dave Koupal. The group's tight song structure and use of heavy distortion were hailed as extremely influential by numerous critics and musicians. They are also considered to be the first Pacific Northwest punk band. The band split in 1989, but did re-unite in 1993 releasing three further albums before going on hiatus in 1999. The band became inactive after 1999.
Links to Peel[]
According to available tracklistings on this site, Peel seemed to have discovered the band much later in the mid-80's and would play some of their songs on his shows, although much of it were from their older material.
Nirvana, one of Peel's favourite groups, did two covers of the Wipers' songs, 'D-7', which the band did a Peel session cover in 1990, and a studio release of their version of 'Return Of The Rat' in 1992. Both original and covers by Nirvana were played by Peel on his programmes during that time.
