John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Workhouse

The Workhouse are an indie band originally from Oxford and based in London, formed in the late 90's, currently consisting of Chris Taylor (Guitars Bass and Vocals), Steve Hands (Drums and Vocals), and Mark Baker (Guitars and Bass). The group describes themselves as combining influences from early Factory records, The Chameleons and Interpol together with Nineties shoegazers Ride and Slowdive, the band mix effects driven mayhem with warm psychedelia to produce a sound which is something like The Horrors playing chess with Joy Division while watching a Sigur Ros video.

Links to Peel[]

Peel played their debut single in 1999 and continued supporting the band including inviting them to do a session for his programme which they did. In an interview with the Nightshift magazine in 2006, Mark Baker, stated that Peel influenced the band's music:

"Most of the bands that inspired The Workhouse were discovered and championed by John Peel, so he influenced us through music. He was also had integrity, a sense of humour and liked a pint: factors which are common in The Workhouse." [1]

He also talked about the death of Peel:

"It feels pretty sad as we would rather he still be around doing his shows late at night playing terrible Mongolian Trance on a scratchy 12". His death was a big shock to the band. He supported us at Radio 1 and gave us our first radio play in 2000. When we recorded the Peel session it was initially like being at a funeral…you could feel the soul of John Peel everywhere we turned." [2]
