Zinica were a Nicaraguan band formed in the early 80's and hailed from the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua which was once extensively settled by English people, so a number of the towns in that area have English names, such as Bluefields and the main language spoken by the majority in the region is English patois. Many of their songs were based on traditional English folk songs, especially sea shanties, but with a flavour of calypso and reggae. Not much information is known in the English language media whether the group is still active or not.
Links To Peel[]
Peel seemed to have first heard the group in 1986 and was disappointed on Caribbean Celebration to not have seen them when they were invited to the UK to perform. In 1987, the group did a session for Peel's show and after his death, two of Zinica's albums were found in his Record Collection: Z.
